After church one Sunday morning, I was watching football game. So okay, I was sort of watching a football game. I really am not that big of a football fan, but nevertheless you are supposed to try and support the interests of your significant other, so I was being…supportive.
At one point the sports announcer person said that to be a football player, you must have a PhD. He went on to say that all of these men in fact do have PhD’s. I was like wow! Then he said to have a PHD you must have Passion, Hunger, and Drive.
Immediately my brain started thinking, “Hey that’s not much different than being a Christian, or with anything really in life. Passion really is half the battle in anything you take on. I remember trying to learn the guitar once, and my neighbor said to me, do you have passion for it? I said absolutely! She said then you have already won half the battle. I did later on give up on the guitar as some passions are short lived. I may pick it up again; however, it goes to show that if you don’t have a passion for something, you aren’t going to invest yourself in it fully, and you will eventually lose the battle.
How do we get passion as Christians? More than that, how do we keep Passion? A candle only burns bright for so long before it dims, and eventually goes out. You have to keep igniting the fire so it stays lit. (Matthew 25:1-13) Sometimes you have to pray for a desire, since our flesh naturally is enmity toward God. The bible says that God can give us a heart transplant! (Ezekiel 36:26)
To have passion you must know your purpose. Everyone has a purpose, but when we lose sight of what that purpose is, we become lukewarm and die spiritually. Esther knew that God had given her a purpose. (Esther 4:14) So she had the courage to speak up and save her people.
The main purpose and passion for any true Christian is to save the hurting and help the lost find their way, and we all have unique gifts we can use to do this. We must attain to be – Christ Like first and foremost. We can do this by learning more about Jesus and what he sought out to do in the first place. (John 3:16) There are a lot of hurting people in the world, and a lot of times they will seek out doctors for prescriptions to end their pain, or go in search of other ways to fill the empty void. They don’t know that Jesus is the true physician, and he’s given us all PhD’s so that we can practice His healing on others. Here is all you need to know to receive your PhD.
PASSION – “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16
HUNGER – “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” – Matthew 5:6
DRIVE – “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” – Hebrews 11:6
