“The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ – Luke 15:21
“Make my way back home and I’ll learn to fly.” – Foo Fighters.
I was lying in bed one morning, and I could faintly hear a song playing in the next apartment. It was quite interesting as I’d heard it before but had failed to remember what it was, so I googled it. It was the Foo Fighters. I’ve heard the sayings before that you should go back home, or go back in time to figure out who you are in the present, to remember where you came from. But I don’t believe that to be entirely true. When you give your life to God, you are a new creature. Not that all of the old character has gone, it’s just that a better version has come out that you never knew existed. Love can paint such a lovely picture.
Sometimes we have a view of ourselves that is wrong. View’s that the world has painted. Things from our past that the enemy will consistently remind us of seem to come up again and again. So we live short of our potential. Our past does not dictate who we are, or translate our future. We decide our futures; the choice is up to us. God is simply there to help us be our most successful. When we come to God he gives us the most beautiful of robes, and says, welcome home.
“But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.” Luke 15:22
A baby bird learns to fly by trial and error, so do humans. We fly from the nest and learn how to fend for ourselves. The prodigal son had come home. We all fail and fall on our faces before God, but the moment we turn around for help he is right there. Not looking to judge us or condemn us, but to help us move forward and love us unconditionally.
Gods painting of us is much different, we sometimes know it and deny it, because we feel we have to live up to that view. When we fail it is the hardest to believe that God can love us, but He only sees us with Love. With God’s help he can show us who we genuinely are. And we know nothing is impossible with God. (Luke 1:37)
“Others have seen what is and asked why. I have seen what could be and asked why not.” – Pablo Picasso
So go ahead and learn how to fly….
